Answer ALS  “Happy Birthday Steven”

Director: Doug Walker

January 8, 2021 would have marked Stephen Hawking’s 79th birthday—a moment that felt like the right time to reflect on his legacy, and more importantly, continue the fight he helped bring global attention to. To honor that spirit, Answer ALS launched a campaign centered around a powerful idea: making the most comprehensive ALS research dataset ever assembled freely available to scientists around the world.

Directed by Doug Walker, the piece takes a simple but meaningful approach. Rather than overcomplicating the message, it leans into clarity and emotion—connecting Hawking’s story with the urgency and hope behind this massive open-data initiative. It’s less about looking back, and more about what’s now possible because of the work being done.

The campaign was developed in partnership with Gale Partners, with a focus on making complex science feel accessible and human. The message, “The Data Is Here,” serves as both an announcement and a call to action—inviting researchers everywhere to dig in, collaborate, and accelerate progress toward a cure.

From a production standpoint, Caruso Company kept things intentionally streamlined. Doug Walker directed and also handled editorial through his collaboration with 1606 Studio, allowing the project to maintain a consistent tone and vision from start to finish. That continuity helped ensure the story stayed focused and impactful without losing its emotional core.

At its heart, this piece is about momentum. It’s about taking a moment of remembrance and turning it into something forward-looking—something useful. By opening up this data to the global research community, Answer ALS isn’t just honoring Hawking’s legacy—they’re helping carry it forward in a meaningful way.
