Caruso Company teamed up with Slack and director Syra McCarthy to create Work Is Broken, a cinematic, tongue-in-cheek look at life inside the modern office.
The film unfolds over the course of one very familiar workday—where nothing quite goes according to plan. A cast of everyday office workers battles glitchy tech, disconnected tools, and systems that seem determined to work against them. Log-ins freeze. Emails vanish. Texts pile up. Productivity teeters on the edge. What starts as minor inconvenience quickly builds into something more chaotic.
The idea is straightforward: take everyday workflow issues and turn the volume up. The scenarios stay recognizable, but the reactions and timing lean into the absurd. People try to keep up, but the tools aren’t helping and ultimately the work day simply goes off the rails.
Visually, the film keeps things clean and controlled, with DP Andy Hoffman framing the office in a way that feels structured but slightly rigid. That contrast helps the disruptions land more clearly. Production design by Keri Shewmaker reinforces a world that looks normal at first glance, but starts to feel off as things stack up.
The edit, handled by 1606 Studio with Doug Walker, plays a big role in pacing—letting moments breathe just long enough before tipping into the next problem. Music and sound design from Temp Love build alongside the action, adding momentum without losing clarity.
At the close, Slack is presented as a simple fix, shining a light on how work can be better—cutting through the clutter and connecting the pieces. We hope you enjoy the ride.
